The Award

For the benefit of new visitors to this page, the historic smithy, a Grade II listed building, is the last of the four smithies that operated in the parish of Mawnan in the 1800’s and were instrumental in giving the village its name.

Following the death in 1994 of blacksmith Dryden James, the smithy lay dormant.

In 2002, the Mawnan Anvil Trust was formed to oversee the purchase and restoration of the smithy and to create a further three adjacent work units.

Over the following four years, £400,000 was raised from a total of 14 sources, including the RDA, Heritage Lottery, local government, private charities and the local community.

The restored smithy, now part of the village Craft Centre, opened in October 2006.

The craft workers now on site are as follows:

Silversmith - Abigail Brown.
Abigail specialises in a hand raising and sinking technique to create distinctive silver vessels, bowls and jewellery. Her work is featured in exhibitions in the UK including at the Victoria & Albert Museum and also overseas. In December 2014 she was given the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. Abigail also teaches silversmithing, jewellery and metalwork techniques. I

Signwriter - Sheila McCann-Downes.
Sheila produces high quality, genuinely hand-painted, traditional signage for business premises, shops, boats, public houses and private homes. Sheila is also skilled in the art of gilding and uses real gold leaf to create lettering on signs or glass.

Blacksmith – Steven Wilson
Steven Wilson is a blacksmith who could not resist the temptation to relocate from Sussex and occupy a fully restored traditional smithy in Cornwall. No task is too big or small for Steven. He has a range of small items that make ideal gifts, including cufflinks, candleholders, pokers and companion sets. He can also forge traditional hand tools, (replacement) hinges, latches and more besides. At the other end of the scale, he can fabricate bespoke benches, gates, and railings in either traditional or modern styles.
